How to Find the Perfect Photographer for Your Personal Brand
As an entrepreneur myself, I understand what it takes to launch your own brand, and then, finding the courage to come out as your authentic self. Having not just professional photos, but photos that tell the story of your mission and passion, will attract your soulmate clients.
Does this sound like you?
You are visionary and creative.
Your business is your life — it is your soul-driven mission.
You pour all your heart into your work, but your online presence does not reflect that.
It’s one thing to be talented and do great work and it’s another to get clients to buy from you. Your online presence is your storefront and personal brand photography is a crucial element of it. Your website is the first gateway for potential clients to see what it is you’re offering and who YOU are. All that to say, it’s crucial to make an impression that attracts the right clients out of the gate.
You want photos that aren’t cookie-cutter and rigid, but photographs that showcase YOU — your values, your style, your quirks and your unique lifestyle. You want photos that get potential clients to fall in love with YOU, not just your product or service.
So — how to go beyond the norm and photograph your true essence and brand? Find a photographer that understands what you’re doing and can help you shine and tell your unique story through your authentic photos.
Go beyond headshots
You’re going to need to go beyond headshots to truly tell the story of your brand. Search for a photographer that speaks to your soul — one that captures your style, the emotion of your brand and your essence. If you’re not quite sure where to start, go on Pinterest and create a Brand Vision Board. Put together colors you love, typography, dream locations, brand designs from other small business’ owners you love… and create an overall aesthetic. This helps you pinpoint what visual elements you love and want to represent your brand — plus it’s fun and inspirational and gives you ideas for your shoot!
Search for ‘Entrepreneur Brand Photos’, ‘San Francisco Personal Brand Photographer’ or what’s relevant to your area, and start checking out photographer’s websites/portfolios. You’ll get a sense of what their style is and if they have experience taking personal branding photos — this is important. Check out their client work, social media and ‘About’ page. If their style speaks to you, reach out for a consultation.
Book a Consultation Before Booking the Photographer
You want to hire a photographer that you click with. These aren’t headshots (which are great and serve a purpose too!), these are fun, inspiring and authentic photos of you in your element. Having an emotional connection with your photographer is just as important as their talent — someone you can bounce ideas off of, get inspired from and receive motivation when you need it. Most photographers offer free consults or are willing. You want to chat with your photographer before hiring to make sure you’re on the same page.
Ask the Right Questions
In addition to seeing if you’re a match initially, explore what types of photography they specialize in: documentary, lifestyle, business, etc. Another thing to ask is if they use indoor studio lighting or natural lighting. Note the timeliness of their responses, their level of enthusiasm and flexibility and if they have experience in the type of shoot you’re wanting. Don’t settle! You will find the right photographer for you if you truly know what you’re looking for and feel excited about working together.
